The senior ensemble the Bellingen Youth Orchestra (BYO) Sinfonia was initiated by Annie Phelan (BYO Artistic Director) and Amber Davis (Sinfonia Conductor). They saw a growing need to cater to our most advanced string players in the Bellingen Youth Orchestra. The BYO was lucky enough that Amber had recently moved to Bellingen from Sydney. Bringing a wealth of experience with her, BYO, specifically the 23 years she spent playing and working as a mentor with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra.
The Sinfonia had their debut performance earlier this year, playing at the Memorial Hall alongside the Haydn Ensemble. Their performance of ‘Corelli’s Christmas Concerto’ stunned the audience and it was at this point that Amber knew she had a very talented group of young musicians that she could challenge and motivate to play beyond their previous comfort zones. The Sinfonia then played our annual BYO concert where they played like champions, the repertoire included Grieg’s Elegiac melody no 2 Tchaikovsky Serenade mvt 4‘ and‘The Old Reinlander ‘from the Woodworks Album and met with a rousing reception’.
Over the year, the Sinfonia has had new members join, with the ensemble currently hosting 23 players. We are very excited to be playing our own concert and to share with our local community the exceptional ensemble that is the BYO Sinfonia. Please join us on the 24th of November for an afternoon of pure musical bliss. This is Vivaldi in all his musical ingenuity, the best known of his works, imagine closing your eyes and be taken away with musical imagery of flowing creeks, singing birds, a shepherd and his barking dog, buzzing flies, storms, drunken dancers, hunting parties from both the hunters’ and the prey’s point of view, frozen landscapes, and warm winter fires. Welcome to ‘From Tuscany in Spring’. Our repertoire will also include ‘Tchaikovsky’s Serenade for Strings – Waltz and Finale and will finish with something a little more modern, music from the Danish String Quartet’s Last Leaf album. If you don’t feel like smelling the roses now, you will after this!
