Coffs Harbour Junior Classic Results

The Coffs Junior Classic heralded the start of some budding squash careers during the weekend with large numbers in the boys and girls Under 13 and 11Age groups. Many of the players were competing in their first State ranking tournament and the energy displayed was impressive throughout the first days play.

In the Under 11 Boys division Joshua Lim and Hugh Clifford worked tirelessly throughout their epic encounter with Joshua winning the fifth game 22-20 but the onlookers were very impressed with the sportsmanship shown by both boys throughout the match. Many of the juniors have shown rapid improvement during the weekend and benefited from the changed scoring format and longer games which helped improve their all-round court skills. The final between Sam Moriz and Taylor Gilbert of Dorrigo proved to be a cracker with Samual sneaking ahead at the end of each game with both boys trading points to the very end.

In the Girls under 13 division, Riley Carey and Lauren Twidle of Coffs Harbour showed improvement but their opposition including Jessamay Prior and Shona Coxedge from Palm Beach Qld proved stiff opposition. Tanai O’Brien from Gloucester also showed good skills in the Under 13 Girls group to set up a finals berth against Shona Coxedge. The girls showed some great court movement and long rallies before Tanai ran out the winner.

In the Under 19 Boys Division Jacob Ford received a scare on day one with Brad Fullick of Cardiff taking the first two games in their match before Ford found some rhythm and intensity to storm back taking the last three games to remain undefeated and book a spot in Sundays final. Connor Herring put up a strong challenge early in his match on Sunday with Fullick to see who went into the final against Ford.
In the final, Ford opened strongly and gained a commanding lead early in each game with Brad having plenty of court coverage to do as he retrieved many shots from all corners against the relentless pace and pressure before Ford gained the upper hand to take the title running out winner in three games.
