Players from many parts of NSW made their way to the sunny Coffs Coast at the weekend for the Coffs Coast Junior Classic Tournament 2012.
Players put in some mighty efforts, none more than Nicholas Harris (Big River) and Jesse Harrison (Coffs Harbour) who fought out the Division One final in front of players and supporter’s. Harris and Harrison covered the court splendidly, neither prepared to give an edge to the other. With well directed drives to the back corners and hard working boasts by Harrison setting up chances to close out the match in the tie break fifth game, he failed to convert and in a nail biting climax Nicholas won the tie break to record a 11/6 9/11 6/11 11/8 13/11 victory. Both players received a huge show of appreciation from the crowd for the standard of play and effort put in by the boys.
In Division Two, Mark Ning (Willoughby) showed his immense improvement to take out the Under 15 A Division, defeating Jamie Piper (Coffs Harbour) in straight games 11/9 11/7 11/9. Earlier in the rounds these two players had a tough four games with Ning the winner on that occasion in a tie break 11/9 10/12 11/3 12/10.
In the Under 13A Division, Liam Bruno (Moree) stamped his class on the event but was challenged by some rapidly improving players in the round matches. Andrew Ritchie (Coffs Harbour) emerged on Sunday as a finalist for the first time as he showed his ability to consistently out rally opponents. In the final, Liam proved too experienced to win 11/5 11/6 11/5.
In the Under 11 Division Nathan Fitzgerald (Nambucca Heads) defeated Mitchell Brown (Old Bar) in the final. Both were charged with energy to the end but Nathan was able to convert the vital points for a straight games win but didn’t indicate the closeness of the match. Nathan winning 11/7 12/10 11/5.
Encouragement Awards went to Jacob Bird, Gloucester, and Claire McKean of Coutts Crossing.
